More on "Matters of the Heart" Book Clubs
A few entries ago we heard from a teacher in
How strange is it that I almost found myself in the middle of a girl fight this morning? Shortly thereafter, I was very puzzled when trying to speak to two of the girls about what happened and how to keep it from escalating. Then later in the day, I was talking to our reading specialist who wants to get a little book club going for girls and she asked me to be on the lookout for books that girls might be interested in. Last week, one of my colleagues and I were talking about our desire to start a book club for students next year. Then today you give me a link to a book geared toward teenage girls! I checked out the website and bought the book; I’ll donate it to the NHS RC. Thanks for letting me know about this. I truly believe that a higher power exists.
I, in turn, thanked her for starting the first book club ever for Matters of the Heart, and for bringing me closer to my dream – that of having book clubs all across the nation – and offered to send her eight additional books. Well, I just heard back from her, and this is what she wrote:
Again, I can not thank this teacher enough for believing in the transformational power contained in Matters of the Heart: A guide to living and loving your teen years. I know that there will be a book club starting soon, right here in Boca Raton,
Remember to stay connected, and to open your heart to what really matters.

A Message to All Teen Girls
Excerpt from Matters of the Heart: A guide to living and loving your teen years
For most of us, being a teenage girl can be fun, scary, exciting, and confusing at the same time. For all of us, it’s a time of tremendous change! As a teenage girl, you’ll undoubtedly face extremely confusing situations and challenging decisions. Will you pick the right friends, make good choices, stay away from drugs and alcohol, develop self-confidence, and know who you are and what you want out of life? Well, these are just a few of the many critical and unavoidable questions that are part of your process of self-discovery. How you handle yourself throughout this process will greatly influence whether you enter young adulthood feeling empowered and confident, or lost and insecure. The bottom line is this: navigating your way through these years will be difficult, unpredictable, and “bumpy” at times, but having a set of inner guidelines can help pave the way for a much smoother ride.
Throughout this book, these inner guidelines will be referred to as The 10 Matters. I believe that if you understand these 10 Matters and actually put them into practice, you’ll develop a better understanding of yourself, make smarter decisions, and live a happier life – during your teenage years and beyond! Don’t get me wrong – no matter what this handbook says, the voyage through the teen years is no easy ride. It comes with internal and external changes that often create a feeling of total powerlessness and confusion. Nevertheless, I hope what’s offered here will help guide the way towards a smoother, happier, and better ride. And here’s the good news: These 10 Matters are relatively simple.
Right now, I can hear some of you saying, “I don’t need this book. I’m smart, I’m pretty, and I’m popular. Life is good and I feel fine. I can also hear others saying, “What good will it do. I’m flunking Math, I’m breaking out, and nobody knows who I am.” Know that wherever you are in your life, as a teenager you’ll no doubt be “put to the test” again and again. How well you do on these life tests may depend on your understanding and use of these guidelines. So sit back and enjoy this amazing journey of self-awareness and self-discovery. And trust that, with your active participation and involvement, Matters of the Heart will help you discover a fountain of internal wisdom and empowerment.
And by the way, although I don’t know you personally, I believe in you and I believe in your ability to be the best you can be. After all, you’re a mature, insightful, and extremely motivated young woman, and that’s why I’ve invited you to actively participate in this marvelous process as my “Co-Author!”

First Matters of the Heart Book Club… and it's in Connecticut!
If yesterday I was feeling grateful, today I am feeling ecstatic. You see, I wrote this book with one purpose in mind: to encourage pre-teen and teen girls to discover who they are (as they journey through the Ten Matters presented in the book) and live from a place of clarity, confidence, integrity, love, and strength. It might sound like a huge task, and perhaps even unrealistic, but I know it is within the reach of every teen girl… Creating a book club that helps its members journey through the Ten Matters is most certainly one way. Take a moment to read the following email sent to my publisher just this morning and you’ll understand exactly what I mean (I’ve taken the liberty of deleting the names mentioned, for privacy reasons):
I sent out an e-mail to many of my girlfriends and teacher friends about Matters of the Heart. I thought you (and perhaps the author) would be particularly interested in this response I got from a former colleague of mine. She used to write books with me; now she works as a media specialist in a large high school library in CT:

I love it – this is what I live for! And to show our support, we will be donating eight copies of Matters of the Heart: A guide to living and loving your teen years to this High School for being the very first school to start a Matters of the Heart book club!

Matters of the Heart: A guide to living and loving your teen years
Making the world a better place one teen girl at a time…
Today I am feeling grateful for having so many amazing people in my life, people who have worked hard to help me bring my book to you (only a few more weeks to go!). I have friends who have helped me with my daughters when I’ve been busy meeting deadlines. I have friends who have taken the time to read the book and offer constructive feedback. I had the privilege of working with a group of extraordinary teen girls at a local high school who took the time to read the book and offer amazing feedback, helping me create an even better book for teen girls. I have a friend who is organizing a “book release party” and inviting people for a sneak peak at my newly published book. I have a supportive, loving husband and three amazing daughters who inspire me every day and remind me that being a teen can often times be difficult (and so my book…!). And I’ve had the privilege of working with a publishing company, and specifically with a fantastic person within this company, who believes so much in my book that she took the time to write her friends and tell them about it. Let me share with you a portion of what she wrote…
This is a big hello to all my dear friends and to let you know that I think of you often.
I want to share a very special time with you, as I move on to another path of my life.
Not sure if you know, what my new career is in South Florida (besides going to the beach). I have been working at a company that publishes financial/business books. I have published books with great authors such as Alan Haft and Arnold Goldstein (you can find their books at any bookstore…GO BUY!). You all know that I know nothing about finances, but how to spend what I have! And with that knowledge I ask GOD everyday for what reason has HE placed me at this job!
Well HE has answered… someone very special has entered my life. She came to me with a manuscript on teen girl/inspiration/self-improvement. Reluctantly, I took the manuscript home to read and I could not believe how this book moved my heart (you do not have to be a teen to get inspired by these words, I have often thought about giving a copy to my boss!). Each of you know that GOD works in so many ways… HE so wanted Corin and I to join paths that I now know that I had to endure much pain to bring this special gift to you, your loved ones whether they be your daughters, your friends daughters, yourself or anyone.
Who is Corin…the author, the one I am so blessed to call my new friend. She is amazing, her passion is indescribable. I want to share with you her words “I believe there’s a time and place for everything; yet, it never occurred to me that one day I would combine my love for writing and my love for children and adolescents to create what I believe to be an inspiring, practical, powerful and timely book. Now that I’ve written Matters of the Heart, I can clearly see that my experiences as an adolescent, my work as a therapist and, most recently, my life as a mother of three daughters, were all preparing me to write this book. I was not simply inspired to write Matters of the Heart, I was compelled to write it – as though the book had been waiting for just the right time to reveal itself through me. There are two things of which I’m certain: that I was born to be a mother of three daughters and that I was meant to write and share Matters of the Heart with girls around the world.” …and she is a very healthy eater, of course trying to set my tracks right on that healthy eating stuff….whatever!
Matters of the Heart: A guide to living and loving your teen years is an empowering journey of self-discovery that will leave your daughter feeling more self-confident, more determined, and more in-tune with who she really is.

Matters of the Heart: A guide to living and loving your teen years
Update on the release of Matters of the Heart: A guide to living and loving your teen years
I cannot believe it, but yes, it’s happening… After writing and working non-stop on the release of my first book for almost an entire year (seriously, just ask my family!), Matters of the Heart: A guide to living and loving your teen years, will be out in early February.
How did this all start, you may wonder? Last January, I decided that it was time to re-enter the work force, and I accepted a job starting on February 19th. A few days before starting, I felt nervous and unsure. I thought it was normal, but a part of me knew that deep down inside I was meant to do something else. The day I was scheduled to start working, I literally sat on my bed and prayed for guidance. I said, “G-d, please guide me. I know I am meant to do something, but I have no idea what…” Instinctively, I was led to my old journals, journals that I have kept since I was nine years old. I spent the next three days just reading these journals. I laughed a lot, and I also cried. I wondered why I felt so confused and unsure, and why I had so many questions that were left unanswered. I decided that I wanted to do everything I could to help my three daughters feel differently about their pre-teen and teen years, and before I knew it I began writing a book for them. A week or so into my writing, I realized that this book would not only be of benefit to my three girls but to every single teen girl! I was literally consumed by my writing – I hardly slept, hardly ate, and certainly hardly saw any of my family or friends, but I loved every single moment of it. I felt that this creative flow was a gift and I wanted to make the most of it, not knowing how long it would last…
Not only do I know that I was guided to write this book, but being able to write Matters of the Heart was a gift to myself… and now I hope that you will likewise find that this book is a gift… a gift of a lifetime and a gift for a lifetime. And thank you to all my amazing family and friends who were directly or indirectly involved in this journey. I am forever in debt to you for your ongoing love and support. I love you all!
