Corin:
Reading your book took me back to my teenage years…(I’m almost 27!!) and I wish I would’ve had a book like yours to read and understand that those “problems” that I was having at that moment were just not mine.. But yet, experienced by girls my age all around the world!

Moving from a different country to America, leaving my friends and family, not being able to speak English, and (plus) dealing with my parents’ divorce… I was feeling… helpless!! (Thank Goodness for my mother! :)

Although this is a book for teenagers, I must say that there are issues that as a women are still difficult to overcome no matter how old you are and by reading the book, I was reminded of who I am, and most importantly, who I want to be.

Thank you! YOU ARE SIMPLY THE BEST!!!

NBC's South Florida Today will have me as their guest…

April 4, 2008 – Boca Raton, FL – Corin Wiser, author of Matters of the Heart: A guide to living and loving your teen years to be featured on NBC’s South Florida Today show on April 14, 2008

On April 14, 2008, NBC’s South Florida Today will feature author Corin Wiser, M.Ed., speaking    about her newly-released book, Matters of the Heart: A guide to living and loving your teen years.  The book offers simple and straightforward tools to help the reader discover her inner voice, or “internal guidance system,” and to overcome negative influences on the way to reaching her full potential. Every section offers sound, practical guidance, in the form of The Ten Matters, followed by personal insights from Nicki – a sixteen-year-old girl whose journal entries illustrate that the challenges and insecurities of teen life are all part of a natural process. The book includes writing prompts – questions that encourage girls to think about the choices they make, the goals they have, and the untapped power that lies within. By applying the universal principles presented in this book, the reader soon discovers the precious gifts within, as she learns, grows – and yes – thrives and succeeds during those challenging teenage years. This book is both a resource and a diary, and a must-have guidebook for all teen girls.

Corin Wiser, M.Ed., speaks passionately and from the heart. As a mental health therapist, Corin worked for many years with children and adolescents, and her commitment to empowering teen girls inspired her to write Matters of the Heart. GREAT email from student at Naugutuck High School, CT.

I must share this email – it was written by an incredibly insightful student who is part of the book club in Naugatuck, Connecticut (name has been deleted to respect her privacy)…

Dear Ms. Wiser,
My name is ……, I am a student in the Naugatuck High School book club which is reading your book Matters of the Heart, and Mrs. DiLorenzo has encouraged me to write to you with my comments and thoughts.
First of all, I would like to say I have very much enjoyed what I’ve read so far. I think this is a wonderful book for young girls forming their self image to read and remember while going through the moments in life which will define them.
One reference in chapter four (Words Matter) about Masaru Emoto’s water experiment particularly caught my attention. While I have not had the pleasure of reading Mr. Emoto’s book, the mention of him brought to mind a movie I had seen some time ago which I think ties in very nicely to your book.
The movie is called What the Bleep Do We Know!?  I believe it came out four years ago. It follows a character named Amanda, a deaf photographer who is emotionally damaged by her husband’s affair and divorce. It uses everything from our perception of reality to quantum mechanics to existentialism and metaphysical ideals to explain why this woman is unhappy and what she has to do to be able to love life again. It’s a very fascinating movie and I think appropriate for 13 and older students.
I hope you get a chance to see the movie and write back with your opinion, I know its given me almost as much to ponder as your book has! There are lots of ideas out there I must get to mulling over, thank you for contributing to the collection of authors who really make me think
.

Amazing, right? And this is my response to her…

Hi ……, how wonderful to receive your great email!  Thanks for taking the time to write and share your comments and thoughts.  I have to tell you, although I’m here in Florida, I feel so connected to your book club. I told Ms. DiLorenzo yesterday that I feel like getting on a plane and meeting all of you in person! Who knows, maybe one day… And to respond to what you so eloquently wrote… The movie you mentioned was actually what inspired me to read Emoto’s books.  And just a few months after reading some of his books, I began to write mine. Although I didn’t know exactly what format my book would take, I knew without a doubt that I would dedicate a chapter to how words can influence our perceptions and determine to a great degree the quality of our lives. I also strongly believe that what we say and how we say things influences us in a deep, deep way.  As I mentioned in the book, words are boomerangs that are sent out and come right back to our “core.” Why not then choose the right words? If you liked the movie, you will really like Emoto’s books (he appears in the movie, if I’m not mistaken) – they are simple and easy to read yet filled with wisdom. Your comments reflect how introspective and smart you are. Although I’m not aware of what your personal interest are, I can tell you that if you are attracted to movies like “What the Bleep,” you are a step ahead of many your age. Please keep in touch and feel free to share any other thoughts or comments with me.  In fact, if it’s OK with you, I would love to post your comment anonymously on our web site blog. Please let me know, and I look forward to hearing back from you soon.  Take good care,

More Pictures from the Book Party…

Although it’s been some time since the book party, I’m still feeling the amazing energy from that night when I shared with everyone my reason for writing Matters of the Heart. Now that the book is out and I’m receiving feedback from my readers, I’m constantly reminded of that reason, and it’s a simple one: to offer teen girls a guidebook that can help them find their inner voice. More and more we hear of how teen girls are “lost” or depressed, willing to be who they’re not just to fit-in. Just a few weeks ago we heard of how 25% of all teens have some kind of STD. Even with these statistics, I still believe girls it’s never too late for teen girls to find the power to connect with their inner voice and start making choices based on the things that really matter… Enjoy the pictures and remember to …

Amazing News!

I’m thrilled to share the great news that Matters of the Heart was just approved to be part of the state-wide suggested reading list for the state of Connecticut!  This came about as a result of two extraordinary teachers who are currently heading up a book club at their Connecticut high school.  These teachers received great feedback from the participating students and decided to recommend the book be included as part of the reading list for the state of Connecticut.  The state’s theme this year is “Catch the Reading Bug,” and the focus for teen books is on “metamorphosis.” The high school teachers felt that Matters of the Heart definitely touched upon the metamorphosis theme (but of the “internal, self-discovery kind”).  Needless to say, I am beyond happy.  As many of you may know by now, my goal is to have Matters of the Heart book clubs all over the nation, and having the book be part of a state-wide reading list is just part of this goal! Wishing all of you the very best and reminding you to…

Matters of the Heart Book Launching Party

l

Pictured here is Corin Wiser, author of Matters of the Heart (second from left to right), together with three of the eight high school girls that participated in the focus group prior to the actual publishing of Matters of the Heart…Picture was taken at the “book launching party.”

Just a few nights ago Matters of the Heart: A guide to living and loving your teen years was officially launched at a “book release party” in Boca Raton, Florida.  Over 70 people attended this event and I had the pleasure and honor of sharing how I was inspired and compelled to write this book.  It was such an amazing and powerful night for me that truthfully, I have not slept since! Three of the high school students who participated in the focus group prior to publishing the book sent me flowers and attended the party! Seeing them there that night and signing their own copies of Matters of the Heart was such an awesome, surreal feeling… In so many ways I feel that I am living my book and moving along the ten matters. If I ever question or doubt what is to come next in this journey, I am reminded that thoughts matter and that I must remain focused on what I want.  And what do I want?  I want to see Matters of the Heart “book clubs” all over the nation – in schools, in community centers, and in any and all possible places! If you want to start your own Matters of the Heart book club and need help, please let me know and we will do what we can to help out! And as always…

What is Your Story?

I have a feeling that in reading Matters of the Heart, many of you will feel inspired and compelled to share how the book has made an impact in your life. Maybe you’ll put into practice some, if not all, of the ten matters and by doing so, you’ll begin to see yourself in a more empowering way, or maybe you’ll start viewing the recent challenges in your life from a different, wiser perspective.  Maybe you’ll even begin to monitor your thoughts because you now understand that “thoughts matter.” Whatever the impact is, we want to know… and we’d like for you to share! All stories will remain anonymous and may be used in future publications. You can submit your stories either through the blog or by going into www.mymattersoftheheart.com. Thanks for sharing and remember to …

Matters of the Heart: A guide to living and loving your teen years

This is my movie…What's Yours?

It’s only been one week since Matters of the Heart has been officially published and so much is already happening! The book is selling beautifully, the feedback so far has been great, and the first Matters of the Heart book club begins this coming Tuesday, February 12th, in Naugatuck, CT (and I predict this will be the first of many, many book clubs all across the nation!). In a few weeks there will be a local “book release party” and close to 100 people are expected to attend. What can I say?  In Matters of the Heart we explore how our thoughts matter and how we’re the producers, directors and often the actors in our very own movies, except that these movies are our thoughts, played out in our own minds. These movies – whether we’re intentionally creating them or not – can greatly determine the type of life we’ll live. Since the moment I began writing this book, “my movie” was one filled with passion and a desire to impact the lives of teen girls all around the world. Now that the book is published, I see my movie beautifully and magically unfolding – that of Matters of the Heart creating a lasting and positive impact in the lives of teen girls. That’s my movie – and I plan to hold on to that image for a long, long time.  How about you –what movies are you creating? And as always, remember to…
